The Colour
of Absence
At the edge
of memory
The sea repeats, but never in quite the same colour. In The Colour of Absence, horizon after horizon becomes a quiet measure of light, distance and what remains after a moment has passed.
An almost empty beach and small figures at the end of a pier briefly interrupt the expanse of water and sky. Elsewhere, the landscape is reduced to bands of colour and texture. Through experimental film development, grain, tonal shifts and unexpected hues disturb the familiarity of these views without taking them away.
The photographs move between a place seen and a place remembered. Rather than fixing a single view of the coast, the series lets the image hold the instability of perception: the brightness of a day, the passage of time and the traces of a presence that has receded.
