The body under pressure

The project offers a sensory interpretation of bodily states and actions shaped by a contemporary health and humanitarian crisis.

Working in a style that is sober, precise and compelling, George Popovici maps the body subjected to the conditions of the pandemic: the body as language, space, object and reference. Masks, gestures and multiplied figures form a system of signs in which vulnerability, defence and transformation become visible.

The images move from group compositions to individualised bodies, examining limits, tension and exhaustion while questioning the mythology of the healthy body. The almost entirely unclothed figures evoke humanity’s aspiration to return to its origins.

The spirals of movement evoke progressive development, expressing the evolution and expansion of both the material world and a broader constellation of ideas. The figure performing the dance is ONE—a symbol of totality and synthesis.

Bodily gestures are intertwined with masks that amplify the human being’s inner voice. The exhibition explores the tension between being and appearing, interior and exterior, essence and appearance. Through this complex visual investigation, Pandemic becomes an expression of both the suffering and the triumph of the human body.
